Resting Birds

When my students are struggling to differentiate minim and semibreve rests, I usually ask them to picture a bird on a telephone wire. A small light bird can sit on top, but imagine if an emu were to try to sit on a telephone wire. It would soon be hanging upside down by its toes because it’s far too heavy! In the same way, the lighter rest sits on top of the line and the heavier, bigger rest hangs down below the line. Resting Birds, the next game in the three-minute series, helps students to visualise and retain this memory hook.
